Task 3- Type Design & Communication

Lectures

Week 8 :

Before the class started, the lecturer told us to prepare several different kinds of pens and graphic paper to bring to the next class.

In the classroom, the lecturer asked us to write different fonts on the graphic paper with the pens we had. This is mostly done so that before digitising, we can explore and become more accustomed to our handwriting style.

Week 9 :

This week ,i watched the tutorial video uploaded by Mr Vinod in youtube and have a better understanding on digitizing the letterforms ,i know that we can digitize our letterforms using brush tool or shape tool.

Week 10:

I watched the tutorial video and screen recording of class meeting on how to refine the letters and how to create own font in fontlab 7.

Fig 1.2 Example of refining stage

-The letter strokes are smoothed out during the refinement stage, giving the final product a nicer, more unified appearance.

Fig 1.4 The letters can move along the left and right bearings

Fig 1.5 Kerning table

After we create our letter ,we can use this table to adjust the kerning and numbers between letters using the bottom left column .

Week 11 :

In this week's class, Mr Vinod taught us how to export the fonts we created to Adobe Illustrator ,and using our own fonts to create an A4 poster.

The requirement of poster

-The words must be the same font size
-A4 size and only black & white
-can change angle
-write our name ,font name ,and the year using Helvetica,12pt, 14 leading.

Instructions

In order to complete Task 3, we had to create and design our own typefaces using FontLab 7 and Adobe Illustrator. The letters " A E T K G R I Y M P N " have to be manually sketched out before being digitised in Adobe Illustrator. The font was then to be kerned and adjusted using FontLab 7 before being utilised to create an effective A4 poster.

Exercises

Week 8 :

In class of this week, Mr Vinod asked us to use different pens to write the letter a e t k g r i y m p n as shown in the picture to write  different styles of fonts.

The writing tools that i used are:

- Pentel Brush Sign Pen Twin
- Pentel Brush
- Sharpie ultra fine point
- Monami Co, Ltd

Week 9 :

For this week, i undergo the digitisation process, i used the brush tool to illustrate my word using Adobe Illustrator.

I also added guidelines mentioned by Mr Vinod to help my fonts look neater and better.

Week 10:

This week lesson ,I learned how to refining my letterforms . My letterforms' main problem is that the curved strokes don't flow smoothly. I changed it appropriately using the Direct Selection tool. In order to make my typeface look more fluid, I deleted a lot of the unnecessary dots after learning that having too many of them can result in jerky strokes.

Week 11 :

This week, I continued to modify some of the lines, strokes and details of the font to get the final look of my font.

Week 12 :

This week, I started putting the fonts I've decided to modify into fontlab to make my own fonts.

After putting the font it into fontlab, the size of the font does not perfectly fit the grid and lines, so I made some adjustments to the size without changing the proportion of the font, to achieve the overall neatness and appearance.

Fig 2.6 Screen grab of character map

After putting in all the fonts and tweaking them, I started kerning the fonts。

Fig2.7 Kerning Process

After successfully generating and exporting the fonts I created, I started to focus on the poster.

First, I come out with this design but it didn't work very well.

Fig 2.8 Poster Draft 1 22/6/23

Since I was not satisfied with this poster, I made another poster

Fig 2.9 Poster Draft 2 23/6/23

After that, Mr Vinod provided me feedback to remove the shadow that was behind the font and modified the font's typography so that it eventually took the appearance of a ladder as shown at the below (Fig 3.1).

Fig 3.0 Poster draft

After that, to utilise as the background for the poster, Mr Vinod instructed us to snap texture of the objects nearby.

Fig 3.1 texture

I take a snap on the sofa on my house to get the texture and adjust the colour ,opacity and contrast using Photoshop. Mr Vinod state that I shouldn't utilise too strong texture because doing so would cause the reader to initially focus on the background texture rather than the text and fonts.

Feedback

Week 14 General feedback -Mr vinod check our final compilation task and let us form as a group and rate others students e- portfolio using a,b,c,d,e,f.

Week 12
General feedback
-Make sure that all of the characters are set to the same point size. Additionally, the entire statement should contain the letters you created. It is essential to write down the regulations. The typeface information's point size should be formatted using a 12-point font size. Last but not least, it is best to refrain from placing black text on a black backdrop because it could attract too much attention.

Specific Feedback
- Remove the shadow that was behind the font and modified the font's typography so that it eventually took the appearance of a ladder

Week 11
General feedback
-look at sans serif fonts with broad and thin strokes. In order to maintain the brush's angle ,the exclamation
mark must end in a cap-height.

Week 10
General feedback
-more uniform strokes should be added to the digitised typefaces.Shortcuts can be found by looking at Google Fonts or other examples. To create straighter lines, use the smooth tool to remove extra anchor points and align anchor points.

Week 9
General feedback
-Images can only be scaled up or down simultaneously while preserving their original proportions, so bear that in mind. Additionally, it is possible to repeat and reuse the strokes of each letter, eliminating the need for constant redrawing. It is advised to finish all of the letters first, compare the strokes, and then convert them into forms. Last but not least, it is critical to routinely duplicate the job to produce backups, guaranteeing that no progress is lost.

Week 8
General feedback
-The second one, according to Mr Vinod, is preferable for my task.

REFLECTIONS

Experience:
I found this assignment to be rather time-consuming, and I had not anticipated Final task 3 taking as long as it did. Even if there is definitely space for improvement, designing my own typeface for the first time has been very fulfilling. I've found that this work has been the most difficult thus far.

Observations:
The fonts and kerning used in store names, billboards, and the lettering on licence plates have caught my eye quite a bit since I began the font design process. Even though fonts are a constant in our daily lives, I never truly gave them the attention they deserve.

Finding:
I've learned how challenging it is to design a nice typeface, even with just these 11 letters and 4 punctuation marks, after creating a font from scratch. You might go insane trying to complete it. I can now appreciate designers' patience even more, especially when it comes to kerning.

The shape of the period is related to the dot on the i, but ought to be a little bigger.stronger punctuation is necessary for heavier typefaces.

Fig4.0 GT Academy punctuation lesson 29

A round period overshoots slightly less than an o.Periods should be rectangular and should align with the baseline.

Fig 4.1 GT Academy punctuation lesson 29

The height of the comma is similar to that of two stacked periods. The head of the comma should be a tiny bit smaller than the period.

Kerning tips used in typography :

-Prior to kerning, correct leading and tracking.
-It's about visual space, not actual space, Kern each character alone.
-Reduce the distance between letters with similar shapes.
-Kerning should be done in groups of three.
-Less is more, always.
-Pay attention to the space between words.
