Fundamentals of Digital Matte Painting

INSRTUCTION

You will undergo a series of exercises that will enhance your understanding of matte as listed below:
  1. Perspective Studies (Landscapes and Interiors)
  2. Compositions
  3. Value Studies
  4. Sky replacements
  5. Virtual Plain Air
  6. 2.5D mattes
  7. Invisible Set Extensions

EXERCISE

Sky Replacement

We were instructed to select a high-resolution landscape image and perform sky replacement for different times of day and weather conditions — including sunrise, morning, noon, sunset, night, and overcast skies.

Sky Replacement Process

I adjusted the color and brightness of the mountain based on the sky’s lighting and tone to create a more harmonious blend between the sky and the landscape.

I also practiced perspective drawing by using real-life photos as references.  I learned how to better capture the illusion of three-dimensional space on a two-dimensional surface and how to accurately represent objects from different angles.

Virtual Plein Air

I chose two photos for my virtual plein air. I first sketched the basic shapes, then added shadows, contrasting colors, and some details to make my painting look more realistic

REFLECTION

In this course, I practiced key techniques in digital matte painting, including perspective drawing, virtual plein air, sky replacement, and set extension. Perspective drawing helped me understand depth and spatial accuracy in composition, laying the groundwork for creating believable environments. Virtual plein air improved my observation of light, color, and form by working with real-world locations, allowing me to interpret and simplify complex scenes. Sky replacement taught me how to blend elements seamlessly by matching lighting and color, ensuring a cohesive look. Set extension challenged me to integrate photo elements with original footage, expanding scenes while maintaining realism. Overall, the course strengthened both my technical and artistic skills, boosting my confidence in visual storytelling and scene design.
